A hovercraft is a vehicle that blows large volumes of air under itself in order to lift off the ground and float with zero friction across any smooth, hard surface. If you think ice is slippery, wait until you try air!! Hovercrafts are famous for 360’s and fun. They also make a great science project.
Our hovercraft is designed to work best on land. We believe that as families, home school students, and high school science classes build the kit, it will be most convenient to use the hovercraft on surfaces like parking lots and high school running tracks (which provide a nice race track shape!). The hovercraft also works great at small municipal airports (just ask the airport manager), and the hard packed wet sand on beaches. Any smooth hard surface works great. Our kit is also easy to build, has a low construction cost and is packed full of other great design features. See our TECHNICAL PAGE. Our design also incorporates easily with our homebuilt jet.
Along with an extensive kit informational packet, FSP provides a free copy of "The science behind the hovercraft; A conceptual study guide with questions" with any hovercraft purchase. This study guide explores the scientific principals demonstrated by the hovercraft and its engines; including Bernoulli’s principal, Newton’s third law of motion, aerodynamic stability, and the workings of the 4 stroke engine.
Specifications are as follows:
LENGTH=9' 1 1/4"HEIGHTH=4' 7 1/4" WIDTH=4' 0"PAYLOAD= 2 Adults (Over 350 lbs!) AMOUNT OF FUN= TREMENDOUS TOP SPEED= 30MPH*
*Faster with a downslope or tailwind. FSP doesn't recommend driving the hovercraft at top speed for a number of reasons. We've designed the hovercraft with lots of power to facilitate good handling characteristics, not dangerously high speeds.
